Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) combined for 31 point despite the Lady Patriots (3-15, 1-11 MSC) falling to the #8 Tigers of Georgetown (16-4, 10-2 MSC).
If one thing was certain for the Lady Patriots in 2013-2014, it is that they don’t fall to tough opponents for a lack of effort. Led by the stupendous guard play of Calhoun and Sandlin, the Lady Patriots kept the Tigers on their heels for the entire contest. “Our girls did all that they could do” said Head Coach Lena Bramblett. “They played hard and did what we asked them to do.” After trailing by as many as 16 in the first half the Lady Patriots found life at the end of the half when Sandlin cut through the lane to find the bottom of the net and send the Patriots to the locker room trailing by 13.
In the second half the Patriots fell behind quickly by as many as 18, but showed their grit and determination when Carol Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) came off the bench to drill a shot from behind the arc and cut the lead to 14 with just 8:22 remaining. Following a steal from Sandlin, Stacie Shrout (Florence, Ky.) hit a 10 footer to bring the Patriots within 12. On the ensuing possession Carol Ruiz-Lopez snagged the rebound off a missed Tiger’s shot and pushed the ball up to Sandlin, who found pay dirt, cutting the lead to 10 with 6:52 remaining. However, two costly Patriot turnovers in a row would seal their fate as the Tigers went on a 12-7 run to end the contest 69-54.
The Lady Patriots will travel to the University of the Cumberland’s on Saturday at 2 PM for the “Battle of the Patriots.”
