The St. Catharine Patriots (14-9, 7-6 MSC) held off a last second run to defeat Wilberforce University 83-77 on Tuesday night in Lourdes Hall.
After leading by as many as 19 in the second half, the St. Catharine Patriots had their backs to the wall with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest against a Wilberforce squad that they had defeated earlier in the year 90-70. The Bulldogs kept pace with the Patriots, never trailing by more than six in the final minutes, until Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) forced his way to the basket to earn two shot from the charity stripe. Following the two made free throws from Johnson the Patriots were able to hang on to a slim six point advantage, stopping their longest losing streak of the season at two.
The Patriots had four players in double digit scoring in the win, led by Chris Johnson with 21. On the boards Raymon Austin (Cleveland, Ohio) led the way, hauling in nine rebounds in his nine minutes of play.
The Patriots will return to Lourdes Hall Thursday night when they host Shawnee State in a Mid-South Conference matchup at 8 PM.
