Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) combine for 55 in Patriots 92-80 loss to the Red Storm.

Following a heartbreaking loss to the Shawnee State Bears at the buzzer on Thursday, the St. Catharine Lady Patriots were hungry to hit the hardwood once more to erase any memories. However, despite the 36 point performance on senior day from Machera Calhoun, the Patriots were unable to overcome 38% shooting as they fell to the Red Storm.

After trailing 40-30 after the first half, the Lady patriots would fall victim to an 8-0 opening run by Rio Grande, opening an 18 point advantage. However, the combo of Calhoun and Sandlin would put together an impressive offensive effort to keep the Patriots within striking distance. With just over 14 remaining Sandlin found pay dirt off of a Calhoun pass, sparking a Patriot run. The Lady Patriots would display their never die attitude as they were able to close the contest on a 6-0 run capped off by another Sandlin lay up as the buzzer sounded.

Despite the loss, the Patriots were able to celebrate the careers of their three seniors; Machera Calhoun, Carol Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.), and Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands). During their stint at St. Catharine, the trio combined a four year best 56-60 win loss record that consisted of wins over top 10 NCAA Division II opponents Bellarmine University and the University of Southern Indiana. In addition, in 2012-2013, the trio helped the Lady Patriot make the 32 team National Tournament field in Frankfort, Kentucky for the first time in program history. Furthermore, Hofstraat is currently second in the nation with total blocks at 87 and blocks per game with 3.95.

The Lady Patriot will look to avenge an earlier loss to Campbellsville Thursday when the Tigers invade Lourdes Hall at 6 PM.
