The St. Catharine College Baseball squad (4-8) split their weekend series with visiting Indiana Tech (2-3-1). The Patriots won both openers, only to see the Warriors answer back both days to win the nightcap.
"Overall it was a good series between two even teams", noted Patriot mentor Luther Bramblett. "Our pitching was a lot better this weekend and they gave us a chance to win three of the four games. Defensively, we played great Saturday, but gave them all of their runs on Sunday - we have to do a better job of playing catch."
The Patriots jumped all over the Warrior starter, scoring 6 runs in the first two innings in route to a series opening win, 7-4. John Werner (Anaheim, CA) picked up his first win of the year, tossing 4.2 innings. He scattered 4 hits and punched out 9, allowing 2 runs - 1 earned. Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) tossed the final frames, each allowing a run. At the plate, the Pats were led by Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) who both had 2 hit games, scored 2 runs apeice and each had a RBI. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) went 2-3 with a double. Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) added a 1-3 game with a run scored and RBI.
In the nightcap, the Warriors exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 6th inning in route to a 9-2 victory. Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA) started and suffered the loss. He went 5 innings, scattering 3 hits and allowed 3 runs. Cory Klinger (Rushlyvania, OH) and Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, CA) combined to give up 6 runs on 3 hits and 5 base on balls. The trio of Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA), Eric Donnelly (Coral Springs, FL) and Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL) all had two hit games and Steiner added a RBI.
The Patriot bats erupted for 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning in route to a 3-2 win behind the strong pitching performance of Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA). Borkowski tossed the first complete game of the year for the Patriots, scattering 5 hits and punching out 7. He allowed 2 unearned runs. The top of the Patriot lineup done all the damage. Gonzalez singled to start the inning and Broady singled him to third. Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) singled home Gonzalez. After a sac bunt, Broady scored on a Garcia ground out. Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY) then singled home Jimenez for the Patriot scoring.
In the nightcap, the Warriors scored single runs in the first 3 innings off Patriot starter Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON). Corrente went 3 innings, giving up 3 unearned runs on 5 hits. Claunch tossed the final 4 frames - allowing only 3 base runners to give the Pats a chance to catch up. The Patriot offense scored a run the the bottom of the third when Bohorquez singled and scored on a Gonzalez base knock. SC left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and had a chance in the 7th to win the contest. Broady walked to start the 7th and later scored on a Warrior error. With runners on the corners, the Pats rally ended with a 6-3 groundout and a 3-2 loss.
St. Catharine will be back in action this Tuesday when they host visiting Asbury University in a single nine inning matchup at 2:00.
