In basketball it only takes five to field a team and the St. Catharine Lady Patriots (4-20, 1-16 MSC) used all five of their players available to give the Rams of Bluefield College (14-13, 7-10 MSC) a scare on Thursday night.

With only five players available for Thursday night’s contest, the St. Catharine Lady Patriots knew that they were in for an uphill battle with the Bluefield Rams. Earlier in the season the Lady Patriots gained their only conference win of the year at home against the Rams in their second conference contest of the year, but at that time the Lady Patriots had a full roster. Brilliant shooting in the first half negated the roster size for the Lady Patriots giving them a 37-28 halftime advantage. The Lady Patriots drilled six shots from behind the arc while raking in nine of their 10 free throw attempts in the first half to stay ahead of the Rams.

In the second half the Lady Patriots were unable to regain their momentum, and fell to just 7% shooting from behind the arc. Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) led the way for the Patriots as she tacked on 15 point with 13 coming from the free throw line. For most of the contest the Patriots were able to take care of the basketball, only turning it over 16 times while the Rams committed 17 turnovers. However, it would not be enough as the Lady Patriots fell 70-58.

The Lady Patriots will be on the road in their final contest of the year Saturday against the University of Pikeville at 2 PM.
