The St. Catharine College Patriots (6-9, 1-1) split the opening Mid-South Conference double header Friday with visiting University of Pikeville (10-6, 1-1), coming from behind to take the opener 7-5 and falling short in the nightcap 1-0.
In the opener, the Bears jumped all over starter John Werner (Anaheim, CA) in the first inning, scoring all 5 of their runs. Werner settled down to toss 5.2 innings of scoreless ball, giving the Patriot bats time to catch up. Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) picked up the win in relief. He hurled 1.1 innings with no runs and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save of the year.
Down 5, the Patriot bats scored 3 in the bottom of the second inning to get back in the game. They tallied single runs in the 5th and tied it in the 7th, before getting 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) led the Patriot attack, going 3-3 with 2 runs, a double and a RBI. Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) went 2-3 with a double, 2 runs and a RBI. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) went 1-1 with 2 RBI's.
In the nightcap, fans saw two outstanding pitching performances. Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA) tossed his first CG of the year, giving up a unearned run the the 6th inning. He scattered 2 hits and tallied 7 punchouts in a losing effort. Sutherland from UPIKE shut the Patriot bats down, limiting the Pats to just 3 hits. SC had their chances, leaving 3 runners on over the last 3 innings.
Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) went 2-3 for the Patriots and Diaz added another base knock to his day.
Both teams meet again tomorrow at 1:00 for a single 9 inning affair.
