PATRIOTS SLAM THE BEARS TO WIN MSC SERIES

The St. Catharine College Patriots (7-9, 2-1) beat the visiting University of Pikeville Bears (10-7, 1-2) 6-5 Saturday to win their first Mid-South Conference series of the year.  The Patriots took the lead for good in the 7th off a grand slam by senior Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY)

Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) got the win with his 7 inning start.  He scattered 10 hits and added 5 punchouts.  Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) tossed a scoreless 8th and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up his second save on the weekend.

The Patriot bats were silent for most of the game, behind 4-1 in the bottom of the 5th, Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) doubled and scored on a Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) single.  The big inning came in the bottom of the 7th when Gonzalez and Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) walked, follwed by a Garcia single up the middle to load the bases.  Whitmer greeted Bear reliever Jared Masters with the big shot to deep right field.

Garcia led the Pats with a 3-4 day scoring a run and knocking in 2.  Gonzalez added a 2 hit, 2 double game and scored twice.  Whitmer went 1-2 with a run and 4 RBI's.

The Patriots play again Tuesday when they travel to Asbury University for a DH.
