The St. Catharine College Patriots (7-9, 2-1) beat the visiting University of Pikeville Bears (10-7, 1-2) 6-5 Saturday to win their first Mid-South Conference series of the year. The Patriots took the lead for good in the 7th off a grand slam by senior Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY)
Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) got the win with his 7 inning start. He scattered 10 hits and added 5 punchouts. Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) tossed a scoreless 8th and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up his second save on the weekend.
The Patriot bats were silent for most of the game, behind 4-1 in the bottom of the 5th, Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) doubled and scored on a Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) single. The big inning came in the bottom of the 7th when Gonzalez and Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) walked, follwed by a Garcia single up the middle to load the bases. Whitmer greeted Bear reliever Jared Masters with the big shot to deep right field.
Garcia led the Pats with a 3-4 day scoring a run and knocking in 2. Gonzalez added a 2 hit, 2 double game and scored twice. Whitmer went 1-2 with a run and 4 RBI's.
The Patriots play again Tuesday when they travel to Asbury University for a DH.
