The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (4-21, 1-17 MSC) had their season come to an end on Saturday, as they fell to the Pikeville Bears (13-17, 7-11 MSC) 84-62.
The up and down season came to a screeching halt for the Lady Patriots on Saturday as their offense sputtered in the second half. The Patriots were on fire in the first half, hitting 53% of their shots and going six for 12 from behind the arc. However, despite leading 40-38 at the half, the Lady Patriots could only muster 22 second half points on 22% shooting from the field.
The Patriots were led by senior Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and Carol Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) who combined for 44 points in their final game as a Lady Patriots. On the boards Ruiz-Lopez raked in ten rebounds, eight of which were on the defensive glass, en route to her final double-double.
Despite their up and down season, the three Lady Patriot seniors left a legacy of winning behind them. Machera Calhoun, Carol Ruiz-Lopez, and Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) helped lead the Lady Patriots to their first National Tournament appearance in 2013, while being one of the first groups to play all four years for the Patriots. Rianne Hofstraat finished the 2014 season first place in the Mid-South Conference for blocks (93) and blocks per game 3.86. Her 93 blocks were good enough for a second place finish in the national standing and the 3.86 blocks per game landed her a third place finish.
The Lady Patriots will continue to add to their 2014 signing class, and look forward to future success in 2014-2015.
