St. Catharine College (8-9, 3-1) shutout the visiting Tigers from Campbellsville University (7-8, 1-3) in the series opener Saturday, 1-0. John Werner (Anaheim, CA) tossed his second quality MSC start in row to lead the Patriots pitching in a pitchers duel.
"It was a great win and a game that could've went either way," stated Luther Bramblett the Patriot skipper. "I'm proud of the way our guys competed all day, on the mound and in the field especially. Both teams struggled against two quality arms, we were just fortunate enough to get the run. Both teams had their opportunities to score runs - we left several (11) on base. We have to be ready to go tomorrow, they'll compete and play hard to win both games tomorrow - I promise you that."
The Patriots used the hit by pitch in route to scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) led off the inning with a HBP, he then stole second on a strikeout. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) was hit by another pitch before Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) singled up the middle to score Diaz for the only run of the game.
Werner went 7.1 innings, scattering 3 hits. He tallied 6 punchouts and walked 2 Tigers. The Tigers threatend in the 8th inning and Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) got a ground out and fly out with runners at 2nd and 3rd to end the threat. Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up his fourth save with a scoreless 9th.
Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) led the Pats at the plate, going 3-4 with a double. Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) and Gonzalez were the only other base knocks for the Patriots.
Both clubs meet again tomorrow for a DH starting at 12:00.
