Over the weekend, runs were hard to find for the Patriots, but Tuesday's DH at Brescia University saw the SC bats come alive, putting up 28 runs in a split with the Bearcats. The Pats held a big lead in the opener, but fell 18-14, only to rebound for a 14-4 win in the nightcap.
"Our approaches at the plate were much better," noted Luther Bramblett. "We squared up more balls and kept the ball out of the air for the most part. It was good to see balls jumping off barrels, just wish we would have eliminated all the free bases in the first game."
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 after the first inning and scored in every inning but the second. CJ Gant (Louisville, KY) started for the Patriots and went 4 innings. He allowed 4 runs - 3 earned on 4 hits. SC went up 11-5 when Cory Klinger (Rushlyvania, OH) entered and gave up four base runners on 2 hits and 2 walks. Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) relieved Klinger and gave up 2 more runs before retiring the side.
The Patriots tallied 2 more runs in the top of the 6th and led 13-10, before the Bearcats erupted for 8 runs off Claunch and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ). Brescia tallied 7 hits in the bottom of the 6th in route to a 18-14 loss for the Pats. Claunch took the loss. The bats, however, showed up for the Patriots. They had 14 hits on the day and drew 8 free bases. Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) went 2-3 with 5 RBI's, a double and grand slam. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) went 2-3 with a double, scored 4 runs. Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and scored 3 times and Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) added a 2-3 day with 3 RBI's, a double and scored a run. Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) went 3-5 with 2 RBI's and a run.
In the nightcap, Cody Alvey (Upton, KY) picked up the win, going 5 innings. The senior allowed 4 runs, 2 earned on 7 hits and no free bases. Bruce Tolliver (Whittier, CA) and Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON) both pitched scoreless innings in relief. Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) led the Pat's with a 3-3 game, scoring 3 runs and knocking in 2. Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL) went 2-4 with 3 RBI's and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) went 2-3 with 2 runs and a RBI. Bohorquez went 2-2 with a triple and stole 3 bags, while scoring 2 runs.
