The St. Catharine College Patriots (11-13, 5-4) split with the visiting 10th ranked Cumberland University Bulldogs to win their second MSC series on the year. The Bulldogs got the opener 11-7 and the Patriots took the series with the 7-4 win the the nightcap.
"I was really proud of our effort all weekend," noted Patriot mentor Luther Bramblett. "We really had great approaches at the dish and played great defense all weekend. We could've given up in the opener today, but made it a game and gave ourselves a chance to win. It was a great series win against a great program."
In the opener, the Bulldogs jumped all over starter Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA), scoring 9 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Patriots plated 5 runs in the 4th to cut the lead to 3, 9-6, sending five straight Pats to the plate. Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) and Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) both singled, scored and had RBI's in the inning.
Bruce Tolliver (Whittier, CA) and Cory Klinger (Rushlyvania, OH) both combined to shutout the Bulldogs for 4 innings, giving the Patriots time to chip away. Toliver went 1.1 innings and Klingers tossed 3.1 innings. The Patriots scored a run in the bottom of the 8th when Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) singled and pinch runner Cody Kollenberg (PeeWee Valley, KY) scored on a single by Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA)
The Bulldog would tack on 2 runs in the 9th off Klinger and reliever Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON) for the final margin, 11-7. The Patriots did have 16 hits and were led by Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) who had a 3-5 game. Rosso had 2 knocks and 3 RBI's and Bohorquez added 2 base hits, and scored twice. Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) went 2-4 with a run.
In the nightcap, Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) picked up his 4th win, tossing 6.1 innings. He scattered 11 hits and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) and had 3 K's. Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) tossed the final 2 outs.
The Bat Pats jumped all over the Bulldog starter, scoring 2 runs in the first three innings each. Garcia led the Patriots going 2-4 with a triple, scoring a run and adding 2 RBI's. Kissel had a 2-3 game with 2 RBI's and Rosso continued his hot week, finishing 2-4 with a double and scored twice. The Bat Pats tallied 37 hits on the weekend.
The Patriots are scheduled to play at Indiana University Southeast this Wednesday at 4:00.
