With wind rolling over the hills of St. Catharine College’s campus on Friday, the Patriot tennis squad battled with the Tigers of Campbellsville.
Despite the windy conditions at the St. Catharine College Tennis Complex, the St. Catharine “Racketeers” took to the courts in their conference battled with the Tigers of Campbellsville. The Patriots got out the gate quickly in number one doubles when Andre Jacomini (Brazil) and Ethan Rowton (Paducah, Ky.) stymied Mart and Belch from Campbellsville 9-7. However in second and third doubles the teams of Felipe Barrientoes (Columbia)/Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Spain) and Tyler Glover (Lawrenceburg, Ky.)/Sergio Mendoza (Columbia) couldn’t overcome the Tiger’s attack, putting the Patriots behind 2-1 after doubles play.
During the singles matches the Patriots found life when Felipe Barrientoes defeated Campbellsville’s Jones 6-2, 6-1 in number three doubles. In number one singles, Ethan Rowton took Marot to the extra set but fell late in a nail biting battle. With the Patriots trailing 5-2 Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo would rally the Patriots as he took Beulch to the extra set but would fall in a heartbreaker 10-7 at the end in number five singles. Despite the match final being decided, Sergio Mendoza would put on a show in number six doubles as he would take the Mendoza from Campbellsville to the third set, but would come up just short 11-9.
In their first match of the season, the Patriot women were unable to overcome the Tiger’s offensive as they fell 8-0. However, Taylor, Landrum, Pascoe, and Rush gave the Tigers all that they could handle in the debut.
