SAMS AND GEE LEAD THE LADY PATS AT CENTRE
The “Runnin Patriots” proved that they were becoming a force to be reckoned with, scoring a top five overall finish at the Centre College Track Invitational.
The Patriots made their mark early, winning both the men’s long, high and triple jump. Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) kicked things off for the Patriots when he traded his basketball sneakers in for a pair of track spikes to dominate the field in the long jump. Johnson 6.30 meter mark, a mark that was just under a meter in front of teammate Tyler Dunn (Harrodsburg, Ky.) who posted an impressive 5.45 meter leap himself. In the triple jump, William Bailey (Valley, Ala.) improved by eight tenths of a meter on his previous mark to nail down a 13.56 meter score. However, Bailey was not all alone in his efforts as teammates Shaun Gordon (Radcliff, Ky.) and Chris Johnson stuck top four finishes as well to give the Patriots 21 points in the event. Johnson made his mark once more in the high jump when he posted a 1.93 meter mark to oust the second place finisher by a mere five one hundredths of a meter, scoring the Patriots 10 more points in the final standings.
On the women’s side Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.) carried the torch scoring a third place finish in the shot put with a personal best 10.89 meter distance. Gee’s hurl scored the Patriots six points in the final standings and served as the best finish on the year for the Lady Patriots in that event. Lindsey Vinson (Dawsonville, Ga.) held up her end of the bargain in the javelin when she tossed a 28.24 distance giving her a third place finish. Following right behind were teammates Sam Osborn (Radcliff, Ky.) and Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) in their first attempt at javelin in their careers. The duo nailed down top 10 finishes with a mark of 22.58 for Osborn and a 20.58 for Just. In the steeplechase Rebekah Sams (Louisville, Ky.) posted the best running finish for the Lady Patriots with a fifth place finish in the steeplechase by way of a 16:07.48.
The Patriots will head to the Mid-South Conference Championships this weekend at the University of Cumberland’s for a chance at a national tournament berth.
