St. Catharine College (19-18, 10-8) scored a run in the top of the 11th inning and held on for the win at Berea College (18-18) Tuesday, 11-10. Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up the win in his four innings of scoreless relief.
Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) walked to leadoff the 11th, then stole 2nd and 3rd and scored the winning run on a Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) sac fly to right with one out. McCoy then finished off the Mountaineers in the bottom half of the inning, getting a double play and fly out to end the longest game of the season for the Patriots.
The Bat Pats jumped on Berea in the 2nd and 3rd innings, scoring 3 runs to take the lead. Berea regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning, scoring 4 times off of starter CJ Gant (Louisville, KY). The Mountaineers added to their lead with 2 more runs in the 4th and got Cory Klinger (Rushlyvania, OH) into the game for the Patriots. Klinger tossed 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on a hit and punched out 3. Gant went 3 innings surrendering 6 runs on 8 hits.
SC got 2 runs back in the 5th inning when Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) homered to right with 2 outs. Garcia singled and scored on the third 2-out hit in the inning, this time by Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA). Berea once again extended their lead in the bottom of the 6th off of Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON), plating 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, and going up 9-5.
St. Catharine answered with a single run on a RBI groundout by Broady in the 7th, only to give it back in the bottom half. Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) allowed a unearned run in his inning of work and handed it over to McCoy.
The Patriots once again cut into the Berea lead with a run in the 8th, when Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) walked, stole third and scored on a Marc Mason (Tehama, CA) sac fly. After a scoreless 8th for McCoy, the Patriots plated 3 runs to tie the game in the top of the 9th. Rosso singled to start the inning, followed by a Garcia walk and Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Broady and Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) both plated runs on groundouts and Diaz hit a sac fly to knot the game at 10 apiece.
McCoy tossed the final 4 innings, allowing no runs and scattering 3 hits. He tallied 3 K's. Garcia went 2-2 with a RBI double and scored 4 runs, while adding 3 stolen bases. Rosso had a 3-6 night with 3 runs, a homer and a RBI. Broady went 2-5 with 4 RBI's.
The Patriots are scheduled to host Union College at home on Wednesday at 3:00.
