Sunday, September 7 - The SCC Men's Soccer team traveled to Hillsboro, Ohio over the weekend to compete in the Southern State Shootout, held at Southern State Community College. St. Catharine's first game on Saturday evening was against Jamestown Community College - Cattaraugas Campus, a team from New York.
After a couple of close losses, the Patriots were looking for a win, and came out quickly. SCC earned a corner kick quickly off the opening whistle. Orest Arendacz served up the corner, and Will Meza finished it off to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead after only 50 seconds had gone by. St. Catharine kept up the fast pace and scored again when Arendacz dropped the ball for Patrick Williams to slot home from about 10 yards out. After only 6 minutes, the Patriots had taken a 2-0 lead. The Half continued much the same with Williams returning the favor by assisting on a goal by Arendacz, and Travis Lyons feeding David Barrett for another goal to make the halftime score SCC 4, JCC-CC 0.
Jamestown Cattaraugas hunkered in on defense during the second half, but SCC kept the pressure on, adding another goal by Arendacz on another assist by Williams, then an unassisted score by Jonathan Foster to finish off the scoring for the 6-0 win.
On Sunday, SCC took on Jamestown Community College, this is the team from the main campus in Jamestown, New York. JCC came with a lot of fight on this day, and the play was pretty even from end to end for the first ten to twelve minutes. Slowly, though, the Patriots began to posess the ball and pressure the JCC goalkeeper. Sixteen minutes into the game, Chad Austin dropped a pass into the box that a running Patrick Williams powered past the JCC 'keeper to open the scorring. With the lead, SCC continued to press and pushed the lead to 4 with 2 goals from Don Russell, 1 goal from Chad Austin, and Patrick Williams earning an assist.
With the halftime score 4-0 the Patriots came out in the second half to finish off the win and preserve the shutout. Unfortunately, JCC scored a goal with 14 minutes left in the game off a runout and a deflection that would put them on the scoreboard. Two second half goals from Will Meza resulting from solid passes by Russell, Jacob Heil, and Travis Lyons capped off the scoring and made the final SCC 6, JCC 1.
The Patriots now stand at 2-0 in the Southern State Shootout, and return to Hillsboro next Sunday to play against host, Southern State in the final game of the tournament. A win next Sunday would give St. Catharine the Shootout Championship.
