WRESTLING KICKS OFF PRE-SEASON IN A MAMMOTH WAY
Wrestling is often thought of as an individual sport with a few team aspects interspersed within the sport. However, the St. Catharine Patriots made a leap toward making their new program a total team concept with a team bonding event at Mammoth Cave National Park this past weekend. The team took to the road on Friday with 26 of their 43 signees to lodge at the Jellystone Camping Resort in order to prep for two days of team events.
On Saturday the team took a tour of the Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave, the largest cave system in the world, on tour that included large domes, canyons, and several cave formations that were new sight for many of the out of state athletes. Of course, no wrestling trip would be complete without a volleyball and basketball tournament in which the coaches joined ranks with their athletes to compete amongst each other for the next eight hours. However, at the end of the grueling stretch two champions prevailed; in volleyball the “Old Dudes” took home the crown, while the “Mad Monkeys” were crowned kings of the hardwood.
On Sunday the team celebrated the most important part of the trip, breakfast, before disembarking for the St. Catharine College campus. The team found refuge in their large assortment of items, refueling from the previous day’s activities. “We had a great weekend” said Head Coach Spencer Adams. “This weekend was a huge success, everyone enjoyed their time together and by the end of the weekend it was clear that what was a once a group of individuals, was becoming a cohesive group.”
The Wrestling Patriots will report to campus is August to prepare for the inaugural season that will kick off in October.
