PATRIOTS SHOOT DOWN THE BEARS
The Patriot volleyball team (15-4, 3-1 MSC) ran their winning streak to four in a row as they dominated the University of Pikeville Bears (7-7, 0-5) last night from the beginning earning a three sets to none sweep of the Bears.
The Patriots got down 1-0 in the first set, but that would be the only time the Patriots trailed in the match. The Bears fought back after being down 3-1 to even things up at 4-4. After being even at 4-4 the Patriots would rattle off eight of the next nine to pull ahead at 12-5. The Bears were able to pull within seven at 20-13, but the Patriots proved to be too much as they won the first set going away 25-14.
The Patriots were able to continue their strong play into the second set as they outscored the Bears 14-3 to open the set. The Bears converted on six of the next seven to pull within six at 15-9. After pulling within six the Patriots would answer with a run of their own outscoring the Bears 5-1 as they doubled up the Bears 20-10. The Bears would have an answer of their own as they scored four of the next five to get within seven at 21-14. The Patriots were able to put the Bears away for good as they scored the last four in the set, thus taking the second set 25-14.
The Patriots blitzed the Bears to open the third set as they rattled off 14 in a row before the Bears knew what hit them. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) served every one of the 14 times as she tallied two aces in the run. However, the blitz wasn’t done there; after the Bears got on the board at 14-1 the Patriots would run off six in a row to take a commanding 20-1 lead. The Patriots were able to finish the set strong as Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) got a kill to give the Patriots the third set 25-4 and the match 3-0.
The Patriots as a team hit a blistering .479 as they converted on 40 of their 71 attacking opportunities committing only six errors in the match. The Patriots had two players hit over .500 for the match as Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) hit .750 and Rebecca Just hit .652. Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) also pitched in a strong effort hitting .455. The Patriot defense was magnificent as they held the Bears to a .014 hitting percentage (almost as good as the Reds).
The volleyball team will look to push their winning streak to five in a row as they travel to MSC foe Campbellsville on Tuesday, September 23 at 7 PM.
