LATE GOAL BEATS THE PATRIOTS
The Patriot women’s soccer team (2-3-1, 1-1 MSC) traveled to Pikeville, Ky. on Saturday as they battled the University of Pikeville Bears (4-0, 1-0 MSC).
The Patriots had their chances early to strike the scoreboard first when Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.) broke free in the eighth minute, but had her shot stopped by the Bears’ keeper. Another opportunity came two minutes later when Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) also had her shot saved by the Bears’ keeper. Amanda Schabell (Alexandria, Ky.) also had chances in the 27th and 31st minute, but both went wide. The Bears had their own chances in the first half as they tallied three shots as a team.
With neither team able to find the back of the net in the first half the two teams remained deadlocked at halftime 0-0.
With neither team able to strike the scoreboard in the first half, both teams pushed their offenses forward to get a go ahead goal. The Bears had two shots in the 52nd minute, but both went off the crossbar. The Patriots attempted to push their offense forward when Amanda Schabell had an opportunity in the 62nd minute, but her shot went high. It looked as though the match was headed into overtime as neither team was able to find the back of the net, but that changed in the 84th minute when the Bears Kaitlyn Adbon was able to find the back of the net to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Patriots had one last gasp when Amanda Schabell was able to break free from the Bears defense, but had her shot go high. The late goal proved to be the difference maker as the Patriots fell to the Bears 1-0.
The Patriot offense was led by Amanda Schabell who tallied four shots. Kinsey Miller-Riney finished with two shots, one of which was on goal. Macy Higdon also pitched in with a shot on goal. There were a total of six offside calls in the match, four on the Patriots and two by the Bears.
The women’s soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Union College at 7 PM at Barber Soccer Complex.
