Jason McDannold’s team continued its dominance Tuesday when they hosted Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland University. The Patriots made quick work of the Bulldogs with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-14, 25-15). It was the sixth consecutive victory for St. Catharine (17-4, 5-1 MSC) and the fifth straight match that they have won 3-0.
Cumberland (11-9, 1-5) actually led in all three sets but the visitors’ advantage never lasted long as the Patriots took control midway through each set. Trailing 6-4 in the opening set, the Patriots embarked on a 6-2 run and coasted to the 25-15 decision.
In set two Cumberland held a 5-4 lead but the Patriots scored 16 of the next 18 points en route to the 25-14 win.
The third set saw the Bulldogs jump to a 2-0 lead but that quickly vanished with a 5-0 St. Catharine run that gave the home team the lead for good. Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) had two of her team leading 11 kills in that final set and Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) put away two kills to lead the Patriots.
With McDannold clearing the bench, Just was the only Patriot in double figures with kills. Her 11 was followed by Lindsay Monson (Pierz, Mn.) who had eight kills and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) who had six. Strickland had 25 of the Patriots’ 28 assists on the night.
Lauren Bowling (Florence, Ky.) and Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) had 14 and 13 digs respectively.
The Patriots now face a showdown for the Mid-South Conference lead when they host Lindsey Wilson Thursday at 7:00. The Blue Raiders are 18-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. They are ranked 12th nationally while St. Catharine was in the receiving votes category in the latest poll where they came in at 31st in the nation.
