PATRIOTS FALL TO THE BLUE RAIDERS
The Patriot volleyball team (17-5, 5-2 MSC) was swept by the visiting number 11 team in the nation, the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders (19-2, 6-0 MSC) 3-0 on Thursday.
The Patriots trailed in the first set 10-7, but were able to get back to back kills by Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) to pull within one at 10-9. The Blue Raiders would answer with a run themselves, as they outscored the Patriots 12-3 to take a commanding 22-12 lead. The Patriots, however, would answer with a 6-1 run to trim the lead to 18-23. The Blue Raiders were able to put the Patriots away as they won the first set 25-19.
The second set began as the Blue Raiders jumped out in front 5-3. The Patriots were able to run off four in a row to take the lead at 7-5. The two would battle back and forth at the Patriots built an 11-9 lead, the Patriots would then score seven of the next 10 to extend their lead to 18-12. The lead, however, was short lived as the Blue Raiders would outscore the Patriots 14-6 en route to a 26-24 win in the second set.
The Patriots would build a 6-3 lead in the third set behind the strong play of junior hitter Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.), who tallied four kills for the Patriots. The two teams would battle back and forth as the Patriots built a 14-9 lead. The lead wouldn’t last long as the Blue Raiders outscored the Patriots 7-2 to tie it up at 16 apiece. The two would continue to battle as they played to a 21-21 tie. However, the Blue Raiders seized the moment as they would end the third set on a 4-0 run to finish the Patriots for good at 25-21. With the third set win the Blue Raiders defeated the Patriots 3-0 to take the match.
The Patriot hitters were led by Rebecca Just who tallied 11 kills and hit .346 for the match. Along with her 11 kills, Just also tallied 10 digs as she recorded her 13th double-double of the season. Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) also turned in a strong performance as she recorded seven kills and a .273 hitting percentage. Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) and Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) each tallied six kills for the Patriots. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) paced the Patriot setters with 32 assists for the match. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) led the Patriot defense with 17 digs.
The Patriots will return to action on Monday when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to battle MSC foe Shawnee State at 7 PM.
