PATRIOTS BITE THE BEARS

     The Patriot volleyball team (18-5, 6-2 MSC) traveled to the “Buckeye State” Monday night to take on the Shawnee State University Bears (11-8, 4-4).

     The first set got started as both team battle back and forth to a tie at 10 apiece. The Patriots would then go on a 6-2 run to take the lead at 16-12 forcing the Bears to call a timeout. The Bears were able to pull within two at 19-21, but the Patriots took over as they ended the first set on a 4-0 run to win the first set 25-19.

     The second set started just like the first, both team would battle to a 10-10 tie. This time it was the Bears who went on a 6-2 run to take the lead 16-12 forcing the Patriots to call a timeout. Both team would then make their way to a tie at 24 apiece, but after back to back kills the Bears took the second set by a score of 26-24. The Bears would tie the match at 1-1 with the 26-24 win in the second set.

     In the third set the Bears grabbed an early lead at 12-9. The Bears would then extend their lead to 18-12 after a 6-3 run. After trailing 20-14 the Patriots would score the next six points to tie the set at 20-20. The Bears were looking to take the third set at 24-22, but the Patriots would get two kills by Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) to take a 24-23 lead. The Bears would tie the set at 25-25, but after back to back kills by Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) and Jordan Strickland the third set belonged to the Patriots 27-25.

     The fourth set saw the Patriots grab an early 9-7 lead. The Bears would then score the next four to take the lead at 11-9. The Bears would continue to keep their lead at 16-13. The Patriots would then go on an 8-0 run sparked by Rebecca Just and Jordan Strickland, who each tallied two kills in the 8-0 run. The 21-16 deficit was too big for the Bears to recover as the Patriots took the third set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

     The Patriot hitters were led by Rebecca Just and Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) who each tallied 13 kills. Shauna Stone finished the night with 11 kills and a .285 hitting percentage. Jordan Strickland finished two kills short of a triple-double. Strickland finished with 42 assists, 16 digs and eight kills. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) led the Patriot defense with 24 digs. Rebecca Just recorded another double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs.

     The Patriots will return to action tonight when they host the University of the Cumberlands at 7 PM. The Patriots defeated Cumberlands 3-1 on September 3.
