PATRIOT VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-2 AT SPARTAN INVITATIONAL

     The Patriot volleyball team (21-7, 7-2 MSC) traveled to Missouri Baptist College over the weekend where they went 2-2 in the Spartan Invitational.

     In their first game on Friday the Patriots defeated the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College (15-7, 3-2 HAAC) 3-1. The Wildcats started the first set on a 6-0 forcing the Patriots to take a timeout. The Patriots would cut the lead in half with a 3-0 run. The Wildcats then went on a 9-3 to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The nine point lead was too much for the Patriots to overcome as they dropped the first set 25-16.

     The second set saw the Patriots take the early lead at 8-6. The Wildcats would then answer with six straight to take the lead at 12-8. Both teams would battle as the Wildcats kept their lead at 20-16. The Patriots, however, would end the set on a 9-2 run to win the set 25-22. In the third set the Patriots would build a 12-4 lead. They would continue to build on that lead as they won the third set going away at 25-12.

     Then in the fourth set the Patriots went ahead at 8-7. The Patriots then went on an 8-1 run as they doubled the Wildcats up at 16-8. The Wildcats never posed a threat to the Patriots in the fourth set as they won the set 25-18.

     The Patriots would face the 12th ranked team in the country, Missouri Baptist (22-1, 6-0 AMC) in their second match on Friday.

     The first set saw the Spartans double the Patriots up at 6-3. The Patriots would cut the lead to one at 11-10, but the Spartans then went on a 10-3 run to take the lead at 21-13. The Patriots would cut the lead to seven, but the comeback fell short as the Patriots fell 25-18 in the first set. In the second set the two teams battled to a tie at seven apiece. The Patriots then went on a 5-1 run to take the lead at 12-8. The Spartans would cut the Patriot lead to one at 14-13, but the Patriots would answer with another 5-1 to extend their lead to 19-14. The Patriots would put the Spartans away with a 5-2 run to win the set 25-20.

     The third set saw the Patriots grab the early lead at 5-1. The Spartans then rattled off seven in a row to take the lead at 9-5. The Spartans would continue to build on their lead at 17-11. The Spartans would close the set on an 8-3 run as they won the set 25-14.

     In the fourth set the Patriots built a 10-6, but just like the third set the Spartans would answer. This time the Spartans went on a 9-3 run to take the lead 15-13. The Patriots would battle back to tie the set at 16 apiece. The Spartans then embarked on 9-2 run to take the fourth set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

     The Patriots would then take their 1-1 record to day two of the Spartan Invitational. In their first game on Saturday the Patriots were swept by the #13 team in the nation, the Cougars of Columbia College (23-4, 5-2 AMC).

     In the first set, the Cougars built a 13-5 lead forcing the Patriots to call a timeout. The Patriots would cut the lead 17-12, but were unable to dig their way out of the early hole as they dropped the opening set 25-17.

     The second set saw the Patriots snag the early lead at 12-11. The Cougars would battle back to take the lead at 16-12 after they went on a 5-0 run. The Patriots would battle back to pull within two at 19-17, but the Cougars would put the Patriots away for good after they went on a 6-2 run to win the second set 25-19.

     In the third set, The Cougars would grab the early lead at 10-6. The Patriots would battle back to tie the set at 14 apiece when they went on an 8-4 run. The two would trade points as they made their way to a 16-16 tie. The Cougars would then embark on a 9-3 run that would give them the third set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

     In their final match of the Spartan Invitational the Patriots would take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy (5-9, 1-5 AMC).

     In the first set the Patriots took the early lead at 7-6. The Patriots would then embark on an 18-6 run to win the first set going away at 25-12.

     The second set, however, was a different story. The Patriots did grab the early lead at 14-11, but the Eutectics would battle back with a 9-5 run to tie the set at 17 apiece. The Eutectics would put the Patriots away for good with an 8-4 to win the second set 25-21.

     The third set saw the Patriots grab the early lead at 5-3. The Patriots then closed out the set on a 20-3 run to win the third set 25-6. With the third set win the Patriots took a commanding two sets to none lead.

     In the fourth set the Eutectics grabbed the early lead at 8-7. The Patriots then went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead 11-8. The Eutectics would battle back to pull within two at 17-15. The Patriots would put the Eutectics away for good with a 9-3 run to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

     The Patriots were led by Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) who were named to the Spartan Invitational All-Tournament team. Strickland posted two games with 40+ assists. She also posted three double-doubles in the Spartan Invitational. Stone also fared well. She posted two matches with 10+ kills. She also recorded three matches with a hitting percentage over .300.

     The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday, October 14 when they host archrival Georgetown College, who was ranked 19th in the latest polls.
