An improbable rally gives Team Gold the upper hand in the best of three series, winning the opener 9-5. Down 5-1, the Gold squad plates 8 runs in the top of the 9th inning and holds on in a classic Fall World Series game.
In what started as a pitchers duel, seniors John Werner (Anaheim, CA) and Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) locked horns in an epic battle. Both left the game with the score 2-1 - advantage Purple and Borkowski. For Team Purple, Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) lined a bases loaded double on the left field line to grab a 2-0 lead in the 2nd and Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) doubled with 2 outs in the 5th to make it 2-1.
Austin Willis-Greene (Beaufort, SC) came in relief for Team Gold and the Purple squad scored 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a commanding 5-1 lead, setting up the huge comeback for Team Gold.
In the top of the 9th, Team Gold started with a single and back to back doubles by Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) and Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN). Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) entered the game and gave up 5 runs on 1 hit, a bases loaded double by Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) - his second hit of the inning.
Team Purple loaded the bases off reliever Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, CA), but Lerma K'd the final two batters for the Gold victory. McCoy suffered the loss and Willis-Greene picked up the win. Cespedes led the way for the Purple bunch, going 3-4 with a double, 2 RBI's and a run. Arce led the Gold group, with a 2-5 day with a run and 2 RBI's. Guevara and Kissel both doubled and Kissel had 2 RBI's.
The series resumes Saturday at 1:00. The losing team has to put on a talent show for the student body.
