PATRIOTS CUT DOWN THE MIGHTY OAKS
The men’s soccer team (10-5, 4-2 MSC) traveled to the “Hoosier State” over the weekend as they cut down the Might Oaks of Oakland City University (7-5-1) 1-0.
The Patriots and the Mighty Oaks had their chances in the opening frame, but were unable to find the back of the net. Patriot senior goalkeeper, CJ Powell (Louisville, Ky.) played a big part in keeping the Mighty Oaks off the scoreboard in the first half as he recorded three saves.
In the second half the Patriots got on the scoreboard first in 53rd minute when Ashley Woods (Manchester, England) was granted a free kick from 20 yards out. Woods was able to get the goal on the free kick in the right upper 90 of the goal. The Patriot defense was able to hold the Mighty Oaks for the remainder of the game as they won 1-0.
The goal by Woods was his sixth game winning goal of the season. Woods ranks second in the nation with six game winning goals. Woods now has 13 goals on the season where he ranks 15th in the nation. Powell was able to keep the Mighty Oaks off the scoreboard with five saves on the day. Powell now has five shutouts on the year.
The Patriot soccer team will return to action on Thursday, October 30 when they travel to Owensboro, Ky. to take on Brescia University at 7 PM.
