PATRIOT SENIORS GO OUT WITH A BANG
It was a bittersweet night for four Patriot volleyball seniors as they played their final home game of their careers. The four seniors helped guide the volleyball team (26-9, 9-3) to a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Tigers of Campbellsville University (6-26, 4-8).
The Patriots were able to build a 13-8 lead in the opening set. The Tigers, however, clawed back with an 11-4 run to take the lead at 19-17. The Tigers would continue to build their lead as they served for set point at 24-23, but Patriot senior Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) got a kill to tie the set at 24-24. The Patriots would go on to score the next two as they won the set 26-24.
The second set saw the Tigers grab the early 4-2 lead, but the Patriots battled back with a 12-4 run to take control of the set at 14-8. The Patriots pushed their lead to the biggest of the set at 23-13 after back-to-back kills by Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and Shauna Stone. The Tigers would make a run to pull within seven at 24-17, but Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) quickly put a stop the run with a kill to give the Patriots the set 25-17.
In the third set the Patriots took the early lead at 5-4 behind back-to-back kills from Casey Stone (Louisville, Ky.) and Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.). The Tigers would battle back to take the lead at 9-6, but the Patriots fought back with a 10-4 run to take the lead 16-13 forcing the Tigers to call a timeout. The Tigers pulled within three at 21-18, but the Patriots weren’t going to be denied on as they finished the set with four in a row to win the set 28-18 and the match 3-0.
The Patriot seniors lead the way as they combined for 18 kills on the night. They were led by Shauna Stone who finished with eight. Lauren Bowling, a senior from Florence, Ky., led the Patriot defense with 14 digs on the night.
Casey Stone also pitched in with 13 digs.
The Patriots will return to action on Thursday when they travel to the “Hoosier State” to take Indiana University Southeast at 7 PM.
