PATRIOT VOLLEYBALL BITE THE BULLDOGS
The Patriot volleyball team (28-9, 10-3 MSC) hit the road on Tuesday night as they swept the home Bulldogs of Cumberland University (12-18, 1-12 MSC) 3-0 to notch double-digit conference wins for the second consecutive season.
The Patriots got off to a hot start in the opening set as they led the Bulldogs 5-1 forcing Cumberland to call a timeout. The Bulldogs would cut the lead to three at 7-10, but the Patriots answered with a 7-3 run to stretch their lead to seven at 17-10. The Bulldogs would continue to battle, but the Patriots reigned supreme as they won the set 25-17.
The second set saw the Bulldogs grab the early lead at 6-4, but the Patriots would answer with a 5-0 to take the lead at 9-6. The two then made their way to a tie at 11 apiece. The Patriots would answer with another 5-0 run to take the lead 16-11 forcing the Bulldogs to take another timeout. The pesky Bulldogs wouldn’t quit as they tied the set at 17 apiece, but the Patriots put the Bulldogs away 25-22.
The third set was just like the second as the two worked their way to a tie at 11-11. Except this time the Patriots went on a 9-2 run to take the lead 20-13 lead. The Bulldogs would battle back, but they committed too many errors down the stretch as the Patriots won the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
The Patriots were led by Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) who tallied nine kills. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) orchestrated the Patriot offense to perfection with 32 assists, while only committing one error. The Patriots hit .250 for the match as the Bulldogs struggled with a -.023 hitting percentage.
The Patriots will travel to Columbia, Ky. tonight to take on the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College, who is ranked ninth in the latest polls, at 7 PM. The game against the Blue Raiders has no bearing for MSC Tournament seeding as the Patriots have locked
