PIKEVILLE BEARS MAUL PATRIOTS IN SECOND HALF
Before a raucous crowd in the cozy confines of Lourdes Hall, the visiting Pikeville Bears overcame a halftime deficit Thursday to top the St. Catharine Patriots 110-87. The Bears, ranked second nationally, singed the nets for 66 second half points to stay perfect at 6-0 and 3-0 in the Mid-South Conference.
After trailing 48-44 at the intermission, Pikeville shot 66 percent in the second 20 minutes and turned a close game into an easy win with a surge in the last four minutes of the contest.
Three players, Kenny Manigault, Macari Brooks and K.K. Simmons, each scored 27 points to lead the Bears who shot 56 percent for the game and hit 27 of 43 free throws (63 percent).
Ben Vozzola poured in 27 points to lead the Patriots who fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Khalil Murphy added 10 points. St. Catharine shot 45 percent from the field and was 13-21 (62 percent) from the foul line.
Pikeville, despite a height disadvantage, outrebounded the Patriots 42-37. Vozzola grabbed six rebounds to lead St. Catharine. In addition to losing the rebounding battle the Patriots were plagued by 26 turnovers.
