PATRIOTS FELL MIGHTY OAKS 53-50
Thursday’s game at Oakland City was not a game that either coach would want to archive to showcase how to play quality basketball. Neither the homestanding Mighty Oaks or visiting St. Catharine shot better than 31 percent but when the final shot was taken the Patriots came home with a 53-50 victory.
The second consecutive win gave Lena Bramblett’s team a 5-8 record while Oakland City (Ind.) fell to 3-7. The Patriots end their pre-Christmas schedule Monday with a home game against Marian University.
In a first half Thursday that saw both teams struggle to make shots, the Mighty Oaks gained a 22-19 lead at intermission. Both teams had eight field goals but Oakland City was 5-7 on free throws while the Patriots were 2-5 from the charity stripe.
After six ties and five lead changes in the throughout the second period, St. Catharine took the lead for good when Cora Moore canned a trey with 3:29 to play to make the score 47-44. The Mighty Oaks twice cut the lead to one point in the final minutes but St. Catharine made four of five free throws to seal the victory.
Sasha Ruiz-Lopez led three Patriots in double figures with 14 points. Miranda Wilson added 11 points and Cora Moore scored 10.
St. Catharine shot 31 percent for the game and the Might Oaks connected on just 28 percent from the field. The Mighty Oaks were 12-15 from the foul line (80 percent) and the Patriots made 11 of 18 free throws (61 percent). Heather Sandlin led the patriots in rebounding with nine boards as St. Catharine won the rebounding battle 49-45.
