The Patriot Grapplers got their first true test of the season on Wednesday night when they hosted Campbellsville University. The Tigers came into the match ranked fourth in the latest coaches’ poll.

The Patriots won two weight classes against the Tigers, both by pin. It looked as though the Tigers would run through the Patriots after they took the 125 weight class by a major decision, but Andrew Lenz (Cynthiana, Ky.) stepped up to give the Patriots a 6-4 lead after he scored a pin fall victory over Ryu Ballard in the 133 division. The Tigers then won the next six weight classes including three by pin. Then in the 197 division BJ Carman (New Haven, Ky.) scored a pin over Evan Decker just 18 seconds into the opening period.

“It was a really close match the score might not have looked that way, but if we had a couple of matches go our way then I think we would’ve had a good chance to pull the upset” stated head coach Spencer Adams. “There were three matches that were decided by less than two points and in all three we were leading at one point or another.”

“All of our guys have the pieces to the puzzle, but they have to learn how to put all the pieces together. It was a great learning experience for our guys,” continued Adams.

It was the first match for Adams against his alma mater, he is a 2012 graduate of Campbellsville University. “I have a great deal of respect for Franky, he is a great recruiter and a great coach,” stated Adams. “They always have a good team and they are always in the top 10 in the nation.”

The Patriot Grapplers return to action this weekend when they compete in Missouri Valley College Wrestling Invitational at Missouri Valley.
