It was about two weeks ago that Matt Taylor’s squad took down Life University at the buzzer after a Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) put back. They met again on Thursday in Marietta, Ga. and it again came down to final seconds.

The Patriots now move to 7-12 and 3-6 in the Mid-South Conference after their thrilling 76-75 win over Life University (9-11, 3-7 MSC). St. Catharine sits in sixth place in the Mid-South with a chance to move into the top five with games against Cumberland University on Thursday at 8 PM and a date with Lindsey Wilson on Saturday at 4 PM.

Lorenzo Dewberry (Detroit, Mich.) tied the game-high with 25 points. Dewberry connected on seven of his 13 three point attempts in the game, but the final one of those seven proved to be the game winner with nine seconds left. Brandon Bobb Jones came up big for the Patriots with 11 points and 10 boards. Demetrus Richardson (Wilmington, Del.) got the starting nod and responded with 10 points. Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) only appeared in one half, but he made a difference with 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Vozzola finished just four points short of a triple-double.

Both teams traded punches in the opening 20 minutes as neither team held more than a five point lead. The Patriots trailed by five on two separate occasions, but were able to battle right back. The opening frame saw nine ties, but it was the home team that took a 35-31 lead into the locker room.

In the final frame Life pushed their lead out to 15 with 10:12 remaining. Dewberry and Vozzola then began to heat up from three over the final 10:08 sinking a combined seven 3’s. But just like their meeting back on January 17th, it came down to the final seconds. The Patriots saw their chance after Life missed a pair of freebies with 25 seconds remaining. Dewberry responded with a layup to cut the lead to two and then after a steal by Dewberry the Patriots had the chance to win or tie. Dewberry hit his final trey with nine seconds left. Life raced down the court and got off a three as the buzzer sounded, but the last second heave was off the mark as the Patriots came away with a 76-75 win.

Julito Hutchinson (Atlanta, Ga.), Brandon Bobb Jones, and Ben Vozzola helped the Patriots win the rebounding battle, 56-31, by pulling down a combined 31 rebounds. For the game, St. Catharine shot 47 percent (31-66) and Life shot 44 percent (26-58). Both teams combined to hit 19 3’s in the contest (St. Catharine: 10, Life: 9).
