The Patriot women’s basketball team (9-14, 1-7 MSC) was in action last night against the Cumberland University Bulldogs (13-9, 6-4 MSC). The Patriots held a 29-25 lead at halftime, but the Bulldogs fought back with a big second half to come away with a 61-57 win.

Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) led the way for the Patriots with 14 points. Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) also pitched in with 14 points on the night. Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) was the only other Patriot in double figures with 11 points.

Both squads got off to a slow start in the opening minutes as it was the Patriots who jumped out to a 10-9 lead nine minutes into the game. The Bulldogs battled back with a 6-0 run to pull ahead by five, 15-10. After back-to-back layups by Wilson and Sandlin, it was the Patriots who took a 29-25 lead into the locker room.

Four minutes later, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 11, 50-39. The Patriots answered with a 6-0 run to pull within five, 50-45, with 6:22 remaining in regulation. After a pair of freebies by Wilson with 47 seconds remaining the CU lead was down to two, 56-54. But two would be the closest the Patriots would get as the Bulldogs hit their freebies down the stretch to come away with a 61-57 victory.
