MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO THE BULLDOGS
The Patriot men’s basketball team (7-13, 3-7 MSC) returned to Mid-South Conference play last night against Cumberland University (8-16, 3-8 MSC). St. Catharine held on to the lead early, but couldn’t hang on as the Bulldogs came away with a 77-70 win.
The Patriots had four players score in double figures led by Khalil Murphy (Willingboro, N.J.), who scored a game-high 21 points to go along with eight boards. Lorenzo Dewberry (Detroit, Mich.) pitched in with 12 points for the night. Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Demetrus Richardson (Wilmington, Del.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Patriots got off to a hot start jumping out to an 11-7 just five minutes into the game. The lead was short lived after the Bulldogs opened up a 10 point advantage, 31-21, with 5:10 left in the first half. The Patriots answered with three straight 3’s to cut the lead to one. But it was the Bulldogs who took a 40-34 lead into the locker room.
Murphy started the second half off with a three to cut the Bulldogs’ lead in half. The Bulldogs answered with eight unanswered to open up an 11 point lead with 15 minutes remaining. The two traded buckets over the next six minutes and change, but after a pair of Dewberry free throws and a three point play by Vozzola the lead was down to one, 56-55, with 8:40 remaining. St. Catharine never got any closer than three in the final eight minutes as they fell to Cumberland, 77-70.
The Patriots will return to action on Monday when they host Wilberforce University at 8 PM in the back-end of a doubleheader.
