St. Catharine College (0-2) opened their 2015 season today and fell short on both ends of a double header at the University of Mobile, 1-0 and 5-0. Cold Patriot bats and strong Mobile pitching were the headlines for the opening day.
Mobile 1 - SC 0
John Werner (Anaheim, CA) tossed a gem in the opener, going the distance on 81 pitches, 3 hits and 7 strikeouts. A two out hit scored the game winner for Mobile (5-1) in the bottom of the 4th inning.
The Patriots out hit the Rams with 5 base knocks, but only reached second base twice. Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) went 2-3 to lead the Patriots.
Mobile 5 - SC 0
The Pats could only muster 3 hits off the Mobile starter and struck out 12 times in route to their second loss. Even with the lack of hits, the Pats had runners at 2nd and 3rd twice with less than 2 outs, but couldn't plate a run. Both Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) and Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) went 1-3 and had a stolen base. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) had a 1-3 day as well.
Starter Omar Hernandez (Fresno, CA) struggled with command. He went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits 3 free bases. Freshman Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, KY) tossed a inning and allowed a run on 2 walks and a single. Freshman James Davenport (Louisville, KY) allowed a run in a inning plus and freshman Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) tossed a scoreless frame.
