PATRIOTS COLLAR BULLDOGS 83-81
It wasn’t a conference win but it was one the St. Catharine College Patriots sorely needed after dropping four of the last five decisions. The win came Monday over Wilberforce University by an 83-81 count.
The game was close throughout but not quite as tight as the final score indicated as the visiting Bulldogs hit a trey at the final buzzer to cut the lead to the final two point margin. The Patriots (8-14) took a 42-37 halftime lead and led by as many as 11 points in the second half but Wilberforce (6-23) wouldn’t go away as they whittled the lead to three points on two different occasions in the final minutes.
Barry Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead St. Catharine. Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) added 16 points and Nick Porter (Owensboro, Ky.) and Khalil Murphy (Willingboro, N.J.) scored nine each in the Patriots’ balanced attack.
St. Catharine will now head back to all conference games in the final stretch of the season. That Mid-South Conference trek starts this week as the Patriots travel to University of the Cumberlands on Thursday and to the University of Pikeville on Saturday. They are back in Lourdes Hall February 21st against Campbellsville.
