The St. Catharine College Nine (5-5) headed south again this weekend, this time to Perfect Game's Lake Point Sports complex, to play their "home weekend series" with Cornerstone University (2-5). The Patriots were able to get in 3 of the scheduled 4 games and took the series winning 1-0, 2-0 and losing 3-0 in a pitching dominated weekend.
"Both teams pitched it really well," stated Luther Bramblett. "The weather (33 degrees start temperature in game 1) had something to do with it and both teams hadn't played in two weeks. But, I was very pleased with the way we competed in the elements, pitched it and gloved it."
SC 1 - CU 0
John Werner (Anaheim, CA) dominated his start in a complete game effort to move to (2-1) on the year. Werner tossed 7 innings and allowed 2 hits while striking out 10 and walking 0. The Patriots were quiet at the plate as well, with Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) doubling for the only hit. The Pats did find their way on base, stranding 8 in the game on 7 free bases.
St. Catharine scored in the fourth inning behind a 4 walk inning by Cornerstone pitchers. A leadoff walk by Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) started the inning and he was moved to second via a sac bunt. Consecutive walks by Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) and Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) loaded the bases and with 2 outs a Cornerstone reliever walked Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) to plate Arce for the only run in the game.
SC 2 - CU 0
Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) continued to dominate pitching with the second CG effort in a row for the Patriots. Borkowski threw 7 innings and scattered 4 hits while striking out 7. He allowed just 1 free base via a HBP.
The Bat Pats warmed up a little, collecting 5 hits and 6 free bases to score their runs. Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) went 2-2 with a RBI and scored a run on a Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) sac fly. Cespedes went 1-2 and Arce went 1-3 with a SB. Marc Mason (Tehama, CA) doubled for the only Pat's extra base hit.
CU 3 - SC 0
Cornerstone gave back what the Patriot arms gave them in the first two games, shutting out the Pat's on 1 hit and punching out 7 guys. The Lone Patriot hit was a double by Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL). St. Catharine had their chance in the 6th inning when they loaded the bases on the Steiner double and a walk and HBP, but a K ended the threat.
Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, CA) started and went 6 strong innings. He allowed 3 runs in the second inning and scattered 4 hits. He punched out 5 and allowed 1 free base on a HBP. Omar Hernandez (Fresno, CA) tossed a scoreless 1, 2, 3 7th.
