MEN'S TENNIS OPENS SPRING WITH 6-3 WIN OVER GEORGETOWN
After having to fight the snow and rain for the last month, Jim Coomer’s men’s tennis squad was finally able to open the spring portion of their schedule.
They opened the spring season up with a 6-3 win over Mid-South Conference foe Georgetown College on Wednesday. Gonzalo Andres Martinez (Madrid, Spain), Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Barcelona, Spain), Felipe Barrientos (Cali, Columbia) and Sebastian Barrientos (Cali, Columbia) all picked up wins in singles action. The tandem of Luis Roman and Kerkoc-Portillo and the Barrientos brothers each picked wins in doubles action.
The pair of Roman and Kerkoc-Portillo got the Patriots off to a 1-0 start when they picked up a 9-7 win in No. 1 doubles action. After dropping the No. 2 doubles, the Patriots bounced back when the Barrientos brothers picked up an 8-5 victory in No. 3 doubles. The Patriots would take the 2-1 lead into singles action.
After falling in the first two singles, the Patriots were able to battle back and win the final four singles to clinch the match, 6-3. Martinez picked up a win over Tristan Nosek in No. 3 singles action. In No. 4 singles action, Kerkoc-Portillo picked up a win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Felipe and Sebastian each picked up straight set wins in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
“This was a big win for our guys,” noted head coach Jim Coomer. “The guys have really improved their doubles play and it paid off big today. We were able to start singles play with a 2-1 lead which is something we have been working toward all year,” noted Coomer.
The Patriots were set to open at home against Adrian College today, but Mother Nature forced the match to be moved to Lexington, Ky. Coomer’s squad will now look to open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host Centre College at 4 p.m. ET.
