John Werner has been on a tear as of late for the St. Catharine College Baseball team. The 6-2 senior from Anaheim, Calif. leads the Patriot pitching staff with a 5-1 record. His only loss came against Mobile (Ala.) in the opening game of the season. Since that opening loss, Werner has been lights out, reeling off five wins in-a-row. In the last five games, Werner has allowed just 14 hits and four runs, with only three of those earned. He has recorded three games with double digit strikeouts, including a career-high 12 against Viterbo (Wis.). Werner followed up his 12 strikeout performance against Viterbo with another 12 K outing against Shawnee State (Ohio) on March 15.
Werner's stats rank among the best in the Mid-South Conference individual leaders. He leads the Mid-South in both earned run average (0.85) and opponent batting average (0.177). Werner is also leading the MSC with 55 strikeouts on the season. His 11.69 strikeouts a game ranks second in the MSC. His five wins on the season is tied for the lead in the Mid-South. Not only are his numbers among the best in the Mid-South Conference, but they rank among the best in the NAIA. He ranks second in the NAIA in both opponent batting average (0.177) and hits allowed per nine innings (3.61). His 55 strikeouts ranks 11th and he ranks 13th in D-I in innings pitched per game (7.056). John ranks 15th in the country in both batters struck out per nine (11.69) and earned run average (0.85). His five runs allowed and five wins ranks 19th and 22nd, respectively.
John was recently named Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. His first honor came on March 9.
