The Patriot men’s tennis squad took a break from Mid-South Conference play to host Brescia University on Monday. The Patriots swept the doubles action en route to a 7-2 victory over the Bearcats.

The Patriots won their first doubles match when Luis Roman (Spain) and Gonzalo Andres Martinez (Spain) picked up an 8-3 win over Brescia’s Brad Dunn and Gustavo Carballo. Then in No. 2 doubles Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Spain) and Alex Morilla (Spain) picked up an 8-1 victory to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. The Patriots made it a clean sweep of the doubles after the Barrientos Brothers picked up an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles.

After dropping the first singles match in straight sets, Gonzalo Andres Martinez fought back to give the Patriots a 4-1 lead after he won 6-3, 6-0. Luis Roman dropped a hard fought match in No. 3 singles to Gustavo Carvalho. The win in No. 3 singles would prove to be the final victory for the Bearcats.

Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo would clinch the match for the Patriots after he picked up a win in straight sets over Tom Roidl in No. 4 singles. Felipe Barrientos and Sebastian Barrientos would finish off the Bearcats after they each picked up a victory in straight sets in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

“I am really proud of the way the guys fought today. I believe it’s the first time all year that we have been able to sweep the doubles and if we are able to have that kind of success then that’ll give us a chance to win every match,” stated Patriot Tennis head coach Jim Coomer.

The Patriots will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Pikeville, Ky. to battle the University of Pikeville Bears in Mid-South Conference play.
