COLUMBIA, Ky. – St. Catharine's (Ky.) Harold Diaz is the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week and teammate John Werner is the MSC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
Werner earns his fifth weekly honor of the season and fourth straight while Diaz grabs his first of the season.
Diaz had nine hits in his 18 at-bats last week to post a .500 batting average in four St. Catharine wins to earn conference player of the week honors.
The Gurabo, Puerto Rico, senior outfielder scored four times while driving in 10 runs as the Patriots outscored their opponents 40-6 during the week.
Diaz produced back-to-back games of three hits and four RBIs in 6-1 and 14-2 wins over Mid-South foe Pikeville (Ky.). He opened the weekend series with the Bears with two hits and a pair of stolen bases in a 9-0 win.
Of his nine hits, Diaz posted five doubles en route to a .778 slugging percentage.
Diaz ranks fifth in the Mid-South with 30 RBIs and eighth in the conference with 30 runs. His 11 stolen bases are ninth best in the MSC. With his week, Diaz raised his season batting average to .286.
Werner continued his dominance on the mound in a 9-0 win over Pikeville to earn conference pitcher of the week honors.
The Anaheim, California, senior, surrendered just three hits and three walks while striking out 10 in his lone appearance of the week in the win over the Bears.
Werner extended his scoreless streak to 35 innings en route to improving to 8-1 on the season.
Werner leads the Mid-South in wins, ERA (0.53), opponent's batting average (.137) and strikeouts (80). He ranks second in the NAIA in opponent's batting average, third in ERA, sixth in strikeouts and eighth in wins.
St. Catharine is 26-9 overall and leads the Mid-South with an 11-3 record.
