The Patriots softball team (11-23, 5-13 MSC) was in action today against the nationally ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders (35-6, 19-3 MSC) entered the game ranked No. 7 in the latest polls and riding a 17 game-winning streak. They pushed that winning streak to 19 after they defeated St. Catharine 9-0 in the opener and 5-2 in the second game. Holly Smith’s team will return to action this weekend when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to battle Shawnee State for a pivotal four game set.

The Blue Raiders would strike first in the opening inning with a pair of runs. Then in the second inning they scored three and they tacked on four in the fourth to come away with the 9-0 win.
Patriot senior, Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, Ky.), started the game and gave five solid innings. She allowed nine runs – four earned – on just three hits. Cammuse struck out six in her performance. Cammuse (5-10) didn’t get any help from her defense who committed six errors in the opening game. Meghan Wolford (Louisville, Ky.) came in in the fifth and allowed just one hit in her single inning of work.
Things looked promising for the Patriots in the bottom half of the first inning after Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) singled to lead off the inning. Then two batters later Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) singled to put runners at first and third. That would prove to be the lone two hits for the Patriots as Blue Raiders’ starter, Casey Bryan locked down the Patriot bats. Bryan (14-2) lasted the full five innings allowing just two hits and striking out six.

The second game didn’t come as easy for the Blue Raiders as the opener proved to be. Lindsey Wilson came away with the victory, but the Patriots wouldn’t go down without a fight.
Lindsey Wilson struck first in the second inning with a single run. Both teams would each score one run in the third and fourth innings. Then after the Patriots trailed by just one run heading into the seventh, the Blue Raiders would strike with a pair of insurance runs in the top half of the seventh to get to the final score 5-2.
The Patriots finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when Brandi Hood (Bardstown, Ky.) led off with a single, then Wickline reached base after being hit to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Three batters later, Shelbi Thornhill (Hardinsburg, Ky.) reached base on an error to score Hood from second. It looked as though the Patriots would get more in the inning after they had the bases loaded, but Blue Raider starter, Jordan Hood (10-2) would sit the Patriots down with one of her 14 strikeouts.
St. Catharine struck again with one in the fourth after Katie Hansgen (Louisville, Ky.) doubled. She would later score on a Tiffany Wickline single. But again Hood were her way out of the jam with a strikeout.
Krystal Cammuse (5-11) again gave a solid effort on the rubber going six innings and allowing three runs – two earned – on eight hits. Wickline came on in relief and allowed a pair of runs on two hits in her only inning of work. Cammuse and Hansgen each picked up a pair of hits.
