The Patriot baseball squad (34-14) won a 5-3 thriller over No. 19 Campbellsville (Ky.) today in their third game of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Bat Pats trailed 3-0 after four innings, but began to chip-away in the fifth with one run. Then in the eighth inning the bats came alive with three runs. They added an insurance run in the ninth to seal the 5-3 victory. St. Catharine will now play either Shawnee State (Ohio) or Pikeville (Ky.) in the nightcap at 7 p.m. ET.
Patriot hurler, Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) picked up the win for the Patriots to move to 3-3 on the season. Lerma lasted seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out five in the winning effort. Lerma gave way to Steven Borkowski (San Diego, Calif.) after allowing a leadoff single in the eighth. Borkowski – who threw a no-hitter yesterday against Cumberlands (Ky.) – picked up the six out save. He allowed just one hit in his two innings of work.
The Tigers (28-11) jumped on Lerma in the early going with two runs in the bottom half of the second. Lerma was able to get two quick outs to open the inning, but the Tigers began chipping away. After a single, a double and a walk the bases were loaded for Brandon Christiansen. Christiansen ripped a single into right field to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Lerma was able to work his way out of the inning after getting a fly out to right.
Campbellsville struck again in the fourth inning by way of the long ball. Christianson again got the best of Lerma with a solo shot to give his team a 3-0 lead. That would be all the Tigers would get as Lerma and Borkowski allowed just four hits over the final five innings.
The Patriots finally got on the board in the top half of the fifth with a run on three hits. Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a double. After Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was able to leg out an infield single, Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) laid down a sac bunt to move the runners to second and third. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) then came through with a base knock to score Gonzalez from third. That would be all the Patriots would get after Mario Morales worked his way out of the jam.
Lerma got some help from his offense in the top half of the eighth inning. St. Catharine came alive with three runs on four hits. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) led off the inning with a base hit; Kissel gave way to Lamont Calloway (Louisville, Ky.) as a courtesy runner. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, P.R.) followed suit with back-to-back singles to load the bases.
After the next batter struck out, Francisco Gonzalez came through with a two-run single to tie the game up a three apiece. The Patriots took the lead after they were able to coax Jake Pannunzio into a balk to score Diaz from third. Pannunzio was able to get back-to-back outs to end the inning.
The Patriots struck with an insurance run in their final at bat after Harold Diaz reached on a fielder’s choice to score Tyler Devine from third.
The Tigers, however, wouldn’t go down without a fight. After Borkowski got two quick outs to open the inning, Brandon Christiansen again came through with a single. Borkowski was able to bear down with a strikeout on the seventh pitch of the at bat to end the game.
