The Patriot softball team (19-26) was in action today against second-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the finals of the winner’s bracket of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Michael O. Buchanon in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Patriots had a hard time generating offense against the Blue Raiders (44-6). They were able to scratch out two runs and seven hits, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 4-2. With the loss, Holly Smith’s squad will face elimination tomorrow against Campbellsville (Ky.) at 2 p.m. ET.
The Patriots had a chance to strike first in the first inning. After Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) led off the game with a double, Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) singled to put runners on the corners with no one out. Carly Benz (Louisville, Ky.) moved Gravens into scoring position after a groundout. That would be as far as the runners got, however, as Casey Bryan (19-2) worked her way out of the jam. Bryan tossed a complete game allowing two runs – one earned – on seven hits.
The Blue Raiders got on the board first with one run in both the second and third innings. In both innings, the run that scored got on via the walk.
Patriot starter, Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, Ky.), was able to hold the Blue Raider offense at bay for the most part. Cammuse (9-14) lasted six innings allowing four runs on five hits. She also walked five while striking out seven.
The Blue Raiders added two important insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth, when they extended their lead out to 4-0 after they scored two runs on two hits.
St. Catharine got two of those runs back in the top of the sixth. The Patriot offense scored two runs on three hits to cut the Blue Raider lead in half. After a strikeout to open the inning, Shelbi Thornhill (Hardinsburg, Ky.) got on with a double to deep left-center. Two batters later, Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) singled to score Thornhill.
McKee then, took advantage of a Blue Raider error and moved up to third. Christina Day (Paducah, Ky.) then came through with a two-out single to score McKee. That would be all the Patriots would get as Bryan was able to work her way out of the jam.
The Patriots last chance came in the top half of the seventh, but again Casey Bryan came through for the Blue Raiders. Bryan recorded a 1-2-3 seventh to seal the 4-2 victory.
