The Patriot baseball team (36-14) is on to the finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament after an 8-6 victory over Cumberland (Tenn.).
Connor Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) picked up the win for the Patriots in relief. Lindsay (3-0) pitched the final seven innings for the Patriots allowing four runs on seven hits. He also finished with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Bulldogs made it interesting in the ninth scoring three times thanks to an RBI double and a two-run double, but Lindsay work his way out of the jam getting a ground out to end the game.
The Bulldogs (20-31) got off to a hot start with one run in the first on two hits. They took a 2-0 lead after scoring another in the third. Cumberland also loaded the bases twice and had nine total base runners through the first three innings, but only came away with two runs, missing numerous opportunities to build a sizable advantage.
St. Catharine finally battled back to tie the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings, but the Bulldogs battled back with a run in the fifth to regain the lead.
The Patriot bats busted through in the sixth with five runs on four hits and one key error by Cumberland. After Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) reached on a fielder’s choice to tie the game up at four, the Bulldogs committed a key error to open the door to a big inning. Two-run singles by Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, P.R.) with two outs game the Patriots the lead for good. St. Catharine tacked on a run in the seventh on three hits.
Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the way at the plate with three hits and a run batted in. Harold Diaz and Alfredo Bohorquez added a hit and two RBI’s. Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, Calif.) each added a pair of hits, while Devine recorded an RBI.
