St. Catharine, Ky - St. Catharine College Baseball player John Werner reached a dream many have that play the game Wednesday when the Texas Rangers called his name in the 32nd round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He becomes the fifth Patriot to be drafted by a Major League Baseball organization.
"We are extremely excited for John," noted Luther Bramblett. "He has worked extremely hard to improve his game on the mound and deserves this opportunity. It's great for our program and our conference."
Werner was named Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Year this year, helping lead the Patriots to a 38-17 record and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. He went 9-2 this season with a 1.48 earned run average. He ranked fifth in the NAIA this season allowing opponents to hit just .168 at the plate. Werner's 111 strikeouts was ninth best in the nation while ranking 10th in ERA.
"John had a great year for us on the bump," added Bramblett. "But, even more important, he was a great teammate and leader. He helped our young guys and his competitive spirit lifted our players."
He becomes the 17th Patriot to have the opportunity to play professional baseball and the 12th under Patriot skipper Luther Bramblett. He's the first player since going to the NAIA that has been drafted.
