Dayton, Tenn. – It seems like just yesterday that the 2014-15 athletic year ended, but today marks the beginning of the 2015 volleyball season for the Patriot Volleyball team.
This weekend the team will be traveling to Dayton, Tenn. to compete in the 2015 Bryan College Preseason Bash at Bryan College. The Patriots will be facing stiff competition with all four of their opponents either ranked in the top 25 polls or receiving votes.
St. Catharine opens with two games today and two more tomorrow. They open with #4 Viterbo (Wisc.) today at 1 p.m. EST and they end the day against #20 College of Coastal Georgia at 5 p.m. EST.
The competition doesn’t get any easier tomorrow when they take on #17 Indiana Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. EST and they end it with a match against the host, (RV) Bryan College at 5 p.m. EST.
Earlier this week the 2015 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll was released and the Patriots came in at #27 where they received 52 voting points. Two other teams in the Mid-South Conference were ranked in the top 25 polls. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) came in at No. 7 and Georgetown (Ky.) landed at No. 11.
The Patriots were picked to finish third in the Mid-South volleyball coaches’ preseason poll where they received 49 voting points. Lindsey Wilson was selected as the favorite receiving 63 voting points including seven first place votes. Defending tournament champion, Georgetown is slated to finish in second where they received 58 voting points and the two remaining first place votes.
St. Catharine is coming off their best season in program history. They ended the 2014 season with a 29-11 record overall and a 10-4 mark in the Mid-South. Although they lost four seniors to graduation, the team returns four seniors and two juniors. They also added a pair of Junior College transfers and a talented crop of freshmen.
They return NAIA Third Team All-American, Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.).
The home opener for the upcoming volleyball season is Tuesday, August 25th against Centre (Ky.). They follow that up with another home game the next day against Asbury (Ky.). Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST.
