Columbia, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team was back in action today at the 2015 Lindsey Wilson College Volleyball Classic. St. Catharine (5-3) came away with two wins on the opening day of the tournament. They first defeated Point Park (Pa.) in a three game sweep, then they beat Grace (Ind.) 3-1.
First up against Point Park, the Patriots made quick work against the Pioneers (0-8) coming away with a 3-0 sweep. The match against the Pioneers was all about runs throughout the match.
The Patriots used a 12-3 run to open the first set to come away with a 25-17 win. Then in the second set, St. Catharine went on a 13-2 run after trailing 8-4 to win the set 25-16. After winning the first two sets, the Patriots carried the momentum into a 25-16 win in the third set to finish off the sweep.
Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) led the offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Just also added 13 digs to come away with a double-double in the win. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) got the offense going with 32 assists, while Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) helped the defense transition to offense with 13 digs.
In their second match up of the day the Patriots battled the Lancers of Grace College. The Patriots used a combination of both offense and defense to come away with a 3-1 win against the Lancers (5-1)
The Patriots never trailed in the opening set as they were able to cruise to a 25-13 win. After trailing 20-18 in the second set, the Lancers used a 7-2 run to win the set 25-22. The Lancers jumped on the Patriots13-8 in the third set, but St. Catharine ended the set with a 17-4 run to come away with a 25-17 win. After Grace scored the first three points in the fourth set, St. Catharine reeled off 10 in a row to win the set easily 25-17.
Once again it was Rebecca Just who led the way on offense finishing with 23 kills and a .356 hitting percentage. Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) also had a strong outing with 16 kills and a .351 attacking percentage. Cat Hall continued her hot streak with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .407. Jordan Strickland added a double-double with 42 assists and 19 digs.
The volleyball team will travel back to Columbia, Ky. tomorrow to finish the Lindsey Wilson College Volleyball Classic with a pair of games. They open with Asbury (Ky.) at 11 a.m. EST, then they take on Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m. EST. Live stats are available for both games and can be found here.
