St. Catharine, Ky. – Just a couple of days after completing their preseason slate, the women’s soccer team was in action today in their home opener against Freed Hardeman (Tenn.).
The Lions (2-0) scored a goal in the fifth minute that turned out to be the deciding factor on the scoreboard as they came away with a 1-0 win over the Patriots. Nina Carrolissen weaved her way through Patriot defenders as she fired a shot from just outside the box that found the back of the net.
The Patriots had their opportunities in the first half. Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) had a shot on frame in the 13th minute, but the goalkeeper was able to get the save. The only other Patriot to have a shot on frame in the first half was Rachel Palazzo (Marietta, Ga.), but she also had her shot saved by the keeper.
The second half played out like the first half. Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) had a right-footed shot on frame in the 51st minute, but once again the goalkeeper was right there to make the save. St. Catharine had other opportunities, but never could find the back of the net.
Rachel Palazzo and Vannah Moreland (Marietta, Ga.) led the way with each recording two shots with one on frame. Anderson and Miller-Riney were the only other two Patriots to record a shot on goal.
The women’s soccer team will return to action this Tuesday when they host Asbury (Ky.) at 7 p.m. EST.
