St. Catharine, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team held their Mid-South Conference opener on Tuesday night against Pikeville (Ky.).
The Patriots (8-3, 1-0 MSC) held the Bears to a .202 attacking percentage on their way to clean 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-17, and 26-24). The Bears were unable to hold down the Patriot offense that tallied a .358 hitting percentage.
The Patriots jumped on the Bears (1-5, 0-1 MSC) early in the opening set scoring the first eight points. The Bears battled back to pull within five at 13-8, but the Patriots ended the first set with a .481 hitting clip on their way to a 25-13 win.
The second set saw the two team’s trade points until the Patriots held an advantage at 7-6. After holding the slim advantage, the Patriots went on a 12-3 run to take a commanding 19-9 lead. The Bears cut into the lead late, but the Patriots were able to close the set with a 25-17 win.
The final set was the most competitive set of the night. The Bears jumped out to a 6-4 lead, but the Patriots answered with a 10-3 run to pull ahead 14-9. The Bears responded with a 7-2 run of their own to tie the game at 16 apiece. The Bears forced extra points after tying the game up at 24-24, but after back-to-back kills by Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) and Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) the Patriots took the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) led the way with a match-high 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Mikaela Beck and Cat Hall added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and Maja Krstonosic (Kikinda, Serbia) combined for 37 of the teams 43 assists.
The Patriots hit the road for their second Mid-South Conference match this Thursday against Georgetown (Ky.) at 7 p.m. EST.
