Upland, Ind. – After getting their season off to a 2-0 start to open the season, the Patriot men’s soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on the road at Taylor (Ind.).
The Trojans (2-1-1) scored the game-winning goal in the final seconds to come away with the 2-1 victory. The Patriots (2-1) scored the opening goal of the game in 30th minute, off the foot of Bradley Wilson (Doncaster, England). The Trojans scored the game tying goal in the 69th minute, setting up the game-winning goal in the final seconds.
The first 25 minutes of the game was a defensive battle. During that time Taylor tallied just two shots, whereas the Patriots were unable to fire their first shot. Things changed in the 30th minute when Bradley Wilson netted his fourth goal of the season. The score would remain 1-0 going into halftime.
After intermission, the Trojans began to seize the momentum. Taylor tied the game with just over 20 minutes remaining in the 69th minute on a goal by Jeremiah Rader. After the Trojans tied it up, both teams began to push forward looking for the go-ahead goal.
The Patriots had their chances to take the lead. Matthew Lowndes (Stoke-in-Trent, England) had a pair of shots in the 70th and 75th minutes, but his first shot sailed high and the other was saved. The final shot on frame came off the foot of Krzysztof Rapacz (Manchester, England), but once again the goalkeeper for the Trojans was right there for the save.
Just when it looked like the game was headed for overtime, the Trojans struck for the game winner. Taylor drew a foul in the final minute and drew up a free kick from just over 30 yards. Lewis Nisbet took the free kick and placed it in the right-side upper 90 for the game winner with 5.7 seconds remaining.
St. Catharine will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 12th in their Mid-South Conference opener at Shawnee State (Ohio).
