The Patriot Women's Soccer team opened up Mid-South Conference play on the road against the Bears of Shawnee State University Saturday.
At the kickoff, Kindsay Miller-Riney tapped it to Sara Herbert, who dribbled past the entire Bears team and shot home a goal just 27 seconds into the match. The Bears answered in the 35th minute when Jenny Campbell knocked home a free kick from just outside the box to make the score 1-1 at the half.
The second half saw a deluge of goals scored. First, scored in the 57th minute as Bethany Massey fed Miller-Riney for a 2-1 lead. The Patriots expanded their lead in the 65th minute when Hayley Greenwell scored her first goal of the season off a Rachel Palazzo pass. The Bears cut the lead to 1 again when Schuyler Jones came up from the back line to head home a corner kick taken by Campbell. The game looked like it might be a tight one through regulation when the Patriots earned a corner in the 87th minute. Rachel Palazzo took the kick that dropped into the box, took a bounce and slid into the goal just past the Bears 'keepers' leg.
The goal gave the Patriots the 4-2 win and a 1-0 record in conference play. The Patriots will take on conference rival, Campbellsville University on Tuesday at the Barber Soccer Complex.
